Biography

William Townsend

Billy Townsend is serving his first term as a Polk County School Board member. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Creative Writing from Amherst College in 1994. Billy is a longtime writer and activist in Polk County -- and parent of three children who attend or attended Polk's public schools. Billy worked as a reporter and editor with Polk newspapers from 1999-2008. He served several years as the editor who supervised education coverage for The Ledger. Today, Billy is leader of the national proposal writing team for the consulting arm of PwC. But he continues to write publicly about education and many other issues in Polk County and beyond. Billy is also an historian and author of the award-winning book Age of Barbarity: The Forgotten Fight for the Soul of Florida. Billy is a member of the Lakeland Kiwanis Club. And he served on the parent board of Harrison School of the Arts.
