Summerlin Academy JROTC Rifle Team Wins State Championship

April 29, 2016

The rifle team from Bartow’s Summerlin Academy has won the Army JROTC Florida State Marksmanship Championship. The victory marked the first state championship for Summerlin’s rifle team since 1998.

The annual competition was held at Island Coast High School in Cape Coral on Saturday, April 23. The event featured 26 champion teams from around the state, with teams of four persons each firing .177 caliber compressed air rifles at two-inch Olympic targets on a 10-meter range.

Summerlin Academy’s winning team included cadets Luis Vazquez, Ron Aytona, Nick Cheshire, Allen Gubbini, and alternate Trevor Grimes.

Vazquez, a Summerlin senior and team captain, topped 104 competitors to garner the 2016 title as State of Florida Individual Marksman Champion. He is Summerlin’s first individual state marksman champion since 1996.

Vazquez will go on to compete at the national level, attending the National JROTC Marksmanship Competition held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado in July.
